چکیده

Daily periodicity of growth increments in stylets was validated in wild-caught Octopus vulgaris maintained under controlled conditions. It was corroborated by staining the stylets either with oxytetracycline or tetracycline, and comparing the number of rings produced with the number of days elapsed. In all, 19 animals (10 males and 9 females; 680–1470 g body weight) were injected with oxytetracycline in Vigo (mean 124 mg kg), and another six animals (1 male and 5 females; 248–570 g body weight) with tetracycline at Naples (mean 120 mg kg). The animals were successfully maintained in captivity until sacrificed for up to 6 (one animal), 9 (one animal), 18 (the six animals from Naples), and 21 (17 animals) days. The number of increments counted in transverse stylet sections was 18.9 ± 1.4 and 20.5 ± 1.5 for octopuses maintained for 18 and 21 d, respectively. The mean rate of increment formation was 1.02 increments per day, suggesting a periodicity of 1 increment per day in the stylet. Consequently, the results successfully validate daily increment deposition in Octopus vulgaris stylets in the size range analysed.

Using Age-Based Life History Data to Investigate the Life Cycle and Vulnerability of Octopus cyanea

Octopus cyanea is taken as an unregulated, recreationally fished species from the intertidal reefs of Ningaloo, Western Australia. Yet despite its exploitation and importance in many artisanal fisheries throughout the world, little is known about its life history, ecology and vulnerability. We used stylet increment analysis to age a wild O. cyanea population for the first time and gonad histolo...

Seasonal Variations of Fat and Fatty Acid Composition in Muscle Tissues of Mediterranean Octopuses

The effects of seasons on lipid and fatty acid profiles of muscle types (mantle and arm) of Mediterranean octopuses (common octopus-Octopus vulgaris and musky octopus-Eledone moschata) were investigated. The results showed that lipid levels ranged from 0.75% to 1.60% in both muscle types of octopuses which were considered as lean. Lipid levels in mantle tissues of both octopus species w...

Stock Assessment of the Common Octopus (Octopus vulgaris) in Monastir; the Mid-eastern Coast of Tunisia

The common octopus, (Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797) is widely distributed through the world. It represents an important resource with high economic value. It is exploited by trawl and by other gears such as trammel net, pots and it is also captured by diving. Although the multitude of assessment techniques, few fisheries cephalopods were well managed. In Tunisia, common octopus (Octopus vulgari...

Multiple paternity in the common octopus Octopus vulgaris (Cuvier, 1797), as revealed by microsatellite DNA analysis

Two microsatellite DNA markers developed for the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris, were used to determine genotypes of four brooding female octopuses and 11 embryos sampled from their respective clutches, in order to confirm the multiple paternity hypothesis within this species. Two well-known reproductive behavioural patterns are apparently conflicting in mating outcome: the often-observed mul...
